Inclement Weather Plans

The following procedures will be implemented in the event it is necessary to modify the normal schedule of District activities as a result of inclement weather or for other reasons.

The safety of our students and participants is our primary concern. In the event of severe weather:

School Closures: If Lakeville Area Schools are closed due to weather, all Community Education morning, afternoon, and evening activities (including ECFE and Youth Enrichment) are typically canceled.
Delayed Starts: If schools have a delayed start, morning programs will be adjusted or canceled accordingly.
Kid Zone & Summer Adventures: Specialized childcare programs may have unique operating hours during weather events. Parents should check their email and the district website for specific site status.
Notification: Closures are communicated via the district website, local news, social media outlets, and through our automated messaging system.

Program and Closing Information

Communication Procedures

Community Education communicates in a variety of ways when child care, programs, and activities may be closed, delayed, and/or dismissed early in the event of bad weather or unsafe road conditions.

A phone call, text message, and email (if opted in) will be sent to all families and staff. This will be sent to the student’s primary contact(s) listed in Parent Square.
An announcement will be posted on the district website isd194.org.
Announcements will be posted on the Lakeville Area Community Education Facebook and Instagram pages.

If school starts late (delayed start), here is how it affects your programs:

What’s Still Happening

Afternoon & Evening Activities: All Community Ed classes and facility rentals will run as scheduled.
PM Early Childhood: Afternoon and evening ECFE and Small Wonders will be held.

What’s Changed or Canceled

Kid Zone: All locations will have a delayed start.
Morning Early Childhood: All morning ECFE and Small Wonders programs are canceled.

If a School Day Will Dismiss Early

If school is dismissed early, here is the plan for your programs:

Program Updates

Decision Time: A final update on afternoon/evening activities (Aquatics, Youth, and Adult Enrichment) will be announced by 1:00 p.m.
Canceled: All evening programs are officially canceled.
Early Dismissal: All ECFE and Small Wonders programs will end early.

Kid Zone Procedures

Departure: Children will either be sent home based on their emergency card instructions or stay with instructors.
Pick-up: Instructors will stay with children until parents arrive to collect them.

If There is Inclement Weather on Non-School Days and Weekends

Decision Timelines & Staff

General Programs (Aquatics, Youth & Adult Ed): The Community Education Manager and Director will decide as early as possible on the day of the event.
Facility Use: The Facility Use Coordinator and Director will decide as early as possible on the day of the event.
Kid Zone: The Kid Zone Director and Director of Community Education will make a final decision between 4:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.

In short, Most decisions are made as early as possible that day, but Kid Zone families will always have an answer by 5:30 a.m.

Other Weather Reminders

Safety & Attendance Guidelines

Plan Ahead: Please have a backup plan ready for child care in case of school closings, late starts, or early dismissals.
Bus Tracking: Buses may run late in bad weather. Use the Here Comes the Bus app to track your child's bus in real-time.
Dress Warmly: Ensure children are dressed appropriately for extreme cold while waiting for the bus.

Your Rights as a Parent

The Final Say: You decide if it is safe for your child to attend school.
Excused Absences: If you keep your child home due to weather, simply report the absence to the school. It will be excused.
No Penalties: There are no negative consequences for safety-related absences. Schools will work with you to make up any missed schoolwork.
